Last week I ran into my first problem, and luckily I solved it and worked through it!
Last week, I had two students who were struggling with counting down from 30 all the way to one. I worked with them at the round table and had both of the students on the side of me. I set the box of counting bears on the table and told them to take out a handful of bears. I had them line up their handfuls together and count it out to see how many they had. After that, I asked them how many they would need (so I was incorporating addition and subtraction into it as well). After they got out all 30 bears, I counted with them starting from 30 all the way down to 1. They seemed to get a hand on it so then I asked them to do it by themselves one at a time. They seemed to struggle but they eventually got the hang of it. After they could say it, I had them write it on the white boards. I had them write 1-30 first to see if they could write their numbers. After they got it correct, I had them write it 30-1. They seemed to not be able to write it backwards. After they watched me write it, they could do it. So after they got it correct after watching me, I had them write it again to see if they could do it by themselves. It took them a little while, but they could do it.

Last week I taught my first graders my first lesson. The lesson was on ABC order which was a hard topic for children age s 6 and 7 years old to grasp. I came up with a perfect idea for introducing the topic to them. I played the Just Kids ABC by Jackson 5 for them to sing and dance to to give them a refresher of the ABC's. After the song I had the students sit down quietly as I asked "Who can tell me their ABC's?" I called on multiple students and they all got them right except Morgan. This helped me see who actually did know their ABC's. After that, I showed them how ABC order works with 3 different words and asked them to put it in ABC order for me. The kids really tried their best and actually did quite well; better than I expected. After that, I split them up into groups (tables) and handed them sets of cards to put in ABC order. They also had a chart of the alphabet to refer to for the order of the ABC's. I had the groups as they finished give me an "OH YEAH!" (their favorite thing to do) to signal that they were doing well. After the first round, i switched up the groups and offered candy for the groups that finish quickly and correctly. The next activity for them was a worksheet about using the dictionary. I introduced what a dictionary was and showed them how to find specific words and that the words are in ABC order! For the activity, the students had to find a word, draw a picture of the word, write the definition, and then write the word before the word, the word, and the word after the word. I gave them about 15 mins to complete the worksheet. The kids seemed to do really well with my teaching and were very attentive and cooperating. I did have to give them a mighty groan (they hate these more than anything!) for talking when they were supposed to be listening. If I could improve on anything from my lesson, I would probably work on not being so afraid to punish them. It might hurt their feelings, but its the best thing to do for the classroom. Second Week of my Awesome Internship! This week, the kids really started to take ahold of me being their teacher. As soon as I walk in the class, the kids all raise their hands to show me what they are working on. A little boy named Skyler even read me a story about trucks! It was seriously the cutest thing ever! Although my internship is fun and all the students are well behaved and cute, I did have to carry out my first punishment to a student named Alex. He was working on his Work on Words worksheet while he was supposed to be paying attention to Mrs. Anderson. I told him to put it away and he wouldnt listen to me and kept saying "I have to finish this." I ended up grabbing his paper and putting it in his orange folder for him to take home for homework. I caught him 5 minutes later pulling out his paper and working on it. Mrs. Anderson and I decided to take his orange folder and the worksheet and give it back to him at the end of the day before he goes home. What I'm looking forward to this year is participating in my internship. I cannot wait to get involved and meet MY students! This year is going to be a great year and I just can't wait to become a first grade teacher! These next few days are going to go by so slowly! Just get me into the classroom already! WOW! Do I love my internship or what?! Walking into Alanton Elementary for the first time ever was extraordinary! I was greeted by the most kindest staff that I have ever met. By living in Pungo and going to Creeds Elementary, I have been around a close knit community my whole life. Alanton Elementary greeted me like I was family and like I had known them my whole life. This made me even more excited to meet my cooperating teacher. When I stepped foot into my new home, the kids greeted me with a warm, loud "GOODMORNING!" Mrs. Anderson introduced me to them as Ms. King and told them that I would be with them all year. The kids really took a liking to me. One of the 4 girls in the classroom even walked up to me, grabbed my hand, and told me, "Ms. King, I feel like we're going to be bestfriends." I honestly died of happiness. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but Mrs. Anderson's first grade class! Last year for VTFT 1, I interned at Lynnhaven Middle School with 7th grade history students. I got a lot from my time and experience there. I learned that 7th graders are going through a very weird time in their lives and they are very loud and immature. I also learned how to teach them (it was a lot of positive reinforcement if you know what I mean....candy!). I learned how to put together a lesson plan and carry it out in an effective, but enjoyableway. But the overall best thing that I got out of my VTFT 1 experience was that I want to be a teacher for the rest of my life. Although the students were malicious and mean, I found that I really love this profession and not even a bad class could make me run for the hills!
